A Tearful Goodbye

Fía Lodge is an absolute gem and a dream. After a hair-raising drive up the mountain, the gorgeous house welcomes you with every amenity imaginable inside and out. The fresh mountain air and amazing vistas are worth every penny. The house is luxurious but cozy. Catherine is an outstanding host. We had some tire issues after we hit a pothole on the mountain road in the dark on the way up. Catherine responded immediately to our inquiry about a garage that could assist us to fix the flat. Our issues were fixed within hours the next morning. Fía Lodge is close enough to Killarney to enjoy Killarney without having to stay with the throngs of people. We also had easy access to the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. Our daughter was so sad to leave Fia Lodge she actually cried! Cannot recommend enough.

Forget It all

All I can say is WOW! A truly beautiful property in a magically remote location. The lodge is perfectly appointed with everything you could ever need and is a real home away from home. The views of the mountains are spell-binding and ever changing. We had a fantastic time here exploring the Kerry peninsula and will be back soon! PS - the ‘Fia’ in Fia Lodge stands for Forget It All!

Beautiful Seclusion

Fia Lodge is in a beautiful, secluded location with a wonderful view of the mountains. Both bedrooms are on the main floor, and each has its own bathroom. There are local hiking trails ranging from a walk through lovely wooded areas to dramatic mountain passes. Catherine generously supplied us with lots of staples. Her responsiveness and follow-up were excellent. She was flexible on check-in and check-out time (without us even having to ask) which was greatly appreciated.

Bright Starry Skies

The Fia Lodge was everything we hoped it would be. Completely surrounded by nature, and the views were spectacular. We’ve never seen the night sky look so bright! We even saw a couple of shooting stars! Catherine is extremely quick to respond if you need to reach out. Fia Lodge was the highlight of our visit to the Ring of Kerry.

Idyllic Forest Setting

We absolutely adored Fia Lodge! The house is perched in the most idyllic forest setting, with an incredible view of the mountains. The house was modern, cosy (the couches are especially comfy!), spacious, bright, and beautifully presented, with a well stocked kitchen for dining in. Fia Lodge was the perfect spot for exploring Kerry, we would highly recommend staying here!

Idyllic Retreat

Fia Lodge is probably the best Airbnb we have ever stayed in for location, comfort, cleanliness and hospitality. From the minute we arrived at this idyllic retreat to our departure everything about the lodge was exceptional. Although it is very much off the beaten track and situated up a narrow roadway in the middle of woodland we found our way there easily with directions given. There are a few ways in off the N70 but we found the the road running by Carragh Lake is a stunning way into the lodge. Catherine left a host of local produce and a bottle of wine for us ensuring that breakfast was taken care of. There was plenty of fuel for the fire making the house very cosy in the October nights.

Due to the pandemic we self catered bringing all our own food to complement what Catherine had left in the lodge so we cannot comment on local restaurants. The kitchen was well equipped and all appliances of a high spec. We also used the bbq supplied on two occasions. The beds were very comfortable with good quality bedlinen. The living room has two large comfortable sofas to relax in while gazing out the large picture windows at Carrauntoohil. What a magnificent view! We spent our days touring the beautiful countryside by car and walking on the many beaches nearby and in the local woods which can be accessed directly from the house.

The clear night sky which we were privileged to have on two of our nights was stunning, giving us a clear view of the milkyway and many other constellations. We sat out on deck chairs provided with warm rugs & hot chocolate star gazing, just heaven. Seeing deer in the woods on our way in and out of the lodge was a daily occurrence but magical.

I cannot imagine a better place to spend time getting away from the stresses of daily life. You come home rested and rejuvenated. Thank you so much Catherine for being a wonderful host. We cannot wait to come back again some day soon.

Peace and Tranquility

We had the most wonderful stay at Catherines’ Fia Lodge. The peace and tranquility there is indescribable. We could’ve spent the whole trip just looking at the views through the wall of glass in the lounge! The house is surrounded by woods, streams, mountains, rivers, lakes and is one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen.

We were treated to some spectacular star-gazing on a few clear nights, lying back on the recliner chairs provided. With the Iveragh Peninsula being in a rare dark sky reserve, it was a great experience.

We had some fabulous hikes from the front door, including being able to get straight onto the famous Kerry Way. We loved seeing the deer and goats wandering through the woods. Parts of the nearby Lickeen Woods is described as being like Middle Earth in Lord of The Rings and it truly was spectacular to walk through.

The lodge itself was SO comfortable and had everything we needed. We loved our evenings by the log stove, relaxing after adventuring during the day. Catherine has done a wonderful job at decorating the house in a luxurious way while keeping the focus on drawing the surrounding nature inside, through the beautiful windows.

We’ll definitely return to Fia lodge!

A Week in Natural Paradise

My recent stay at Fia Lodge reminded me of what it means to indulge in a blissful escape in nature, feeling utterly tranquil and delighted by surrounding beauty. A stone’s throw from Killarney, in glorious Glencar, this wonderful retreat home is footsteps from The Kerry Way, nestled in the Reeks District, with vistas of Carrauntoohil, the highest mountain in Ireland. I arrived and felt as if I had found my own little piece of heaven, right in the heart of Ireland.

I retreated from the hustle and bustle for a few days, went “far from the madding crowd”, and felt rejuvenated by the clear air in my lungs and the magic of natural surroundings, in and out of the Lodge! The time at Fia Lodge flew by, though the days themselves were timeless and unhurried. I returned renewed and refreshed, and I’m now dreaming of my next return to this amazing place. Whether you’re traveling solo or with family or group of friends, with plans for sport or relaxation, you’ll appreciate the ease and comfort of this modern-equipped lodge with timeless details. The large living room boasts vaulted ceilings with a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, for breathtaking views. At sunset, it’s especially nice to sit with a tea as the birds chirp, the sky turns purple and rose, and the “mountainscape” is an illuminated gold, orange, glowing in the distance, beyond the lush green.

The house itself is bright and airy all around, with authentic wood accents, and a traditional cast iron woodstove as one of the centerpieces of the living room. From the skylights in the bedroom, fine linens and silk bathrobes, to the relaxing rain shower, there’s ample pampering to make this a luxury experience!

Outdoors, you have all the flora and fauna, hiking, biking, and local adventures you could want! Each day, I took a different hiking route, and was continually enthralled by the wildlife I saw. The surrounding area is a nature preserve—deer sightings are a daily occurrence here! The standout for all (like myself) with a massive case of “ornithophily”—that is, bird loving—will be the feathered friends. Here, there are doves and warblers, hawks and ravens. Many birds I couldn’t identify, with calls that are simply a marvel. Of course, it’s quiet at night—the daytime cheer that the birds bring was literal music to my ears.

Yes, you’ll feel transported in mere hours! For those wanting a relaxing, low-key stay, you’re perfectly suited to spend the days with a hot cup of tea by the fireside, enjoying the company of a good book. You also might enjoy yoga in the upstairs studio space, or cooking in the fully-equipped kitchen, fully stocked with appliances (plus nespresso machine and foamer, for all of my fellow cappuccino lovers!). There’s a laundry machine, a dishwasher, full stove and microwave, as well as a grill outside. It has everything you need for a delightful vacation that’s fully fun and hassle-free.

You’ll be in good hands at Fia Lodge, too, with owner Catherine Morris overseeing all details, from answering questions in advance to ensuring that your stay is enjoyable and easy. While I had complete privacy and space during my time there, any question I had received a timely, helpful response. It was ideal!

I’ll be returning to Fia Lodge, most definitely. The question, now, is how soon I can get back there? In the meantime, the stay there has worked its way into my writing, and it continues to inspire me from afar!
